Alumina hydrate is a highly refractory material used in ceramics.
Potters uses powdered alumina hydrate to prevent pots from sticking to the kiln and kiln furniture in Wadding and kiln wash.
Because alumina hydrate is refractory, only a small amount can be dissolved in a typical glossy glaze. Therefore alumina hydrate can be used to matte a glaze. Powdered Alumina does the same thing, but has no LOI.
