Strontium Carbonate

Strontium carbonate is the most easily accessible source of strontium in glazes. There are strontium frits, but they are hard to come by. Strontium carbonate has similar properties to Barium Carbonate.

• Strontium carbonate changes the color response in blue glazes
  • Makes copper less green and more blue
  • Intensifies blue in reduction celadons (reduced iron oxide)
  • Changes cobalt color? Old Forge creates a strontium glaze with cobalt and says the color is different, but doesn't specify exactly how.
• In low silica glazes, strontium is a matting agent
  • But in high silica glazes, strontium makes glossy glazes like other fluxes

At midfire temperatures, strontium is paired with Ferro Frit 3269 to decrease the calcium content and maximize the strontium content.

Turkish blue glazes are strontium / barium mattes with the addition of lithium and copper to make bright blues.
